As the news of David Bowie’s passing is still bothering me on a daily basis, I have dug out a rare old show from September 1971 at Friars, Aylesbury, where the Spiders band were just forming, the great Mike Ronson on guitar, Woody Woodmansey on drums and Trevor Bolder on bass. The set includes tracks from the Hunky Dory album, a few covers and an unreleased Bowie song. It’s slightly distorted at peak volumes, as it is seemingly an audience or monitor recording, vocal heavy, but clear. David and the band sound full of enthusiasm and good cheer, chatting to the audience warmly, catching them just prior to the Ziggy era where Bowie, in the UK at least, became massive. We can also salute Trevor Bolder who passed in 2013 and Mick Ronson who left us in 1993. I hope you all enjoy it. Here’s to you David and the Spiders. ~ Christy
