Alive ‘N Kickin’

Alive 'N Kickin' BandFrom: Brooklyn, NY, USA

Originally known as Alive And Kicking, this Brooklyn band was led by singers Pepe Cardona and Sandy Toder. They were mainly known for their 1970 hit single “Tighter, Tighter,” which reached #7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Alive ‘N Kickin’ formed in 1968 in the basement of original guitarist Dave Shearer, when they were teenagers. Original members included Toda and Cardona (vocals), Bruce Sudano (keyboards), Woody Wilson (bass), Dave Shearer (guitar), and Vito Albano (drums). The band gained some popularity when they began recording for Tommy James on the label he was signed to, Roulette Records.

In 1970, Alive ‘N Kickin’ began recording sessions. A song written and produced by Tommy James, Bob King and arranged by Jimmy Wisner was to be recorded. Although James initially considered having Alive ‘N Kickin’ record the song, he liked it so much he decided to record it himself. That song was “Crystal Blue Persuasion.” As a gesture of friendship to the group, James wrote “Tighter, Tighter” for them. After recording the song, Albano and Shearer were replaced with Ronny Pell and Johnny Parisio. “Tighter, Tighter” was released in May 1970 and remained on the US charts for 16 weeks, selling over one million copies. Two follow-up singles were quickly released, but both failed to make any impact. After increasing difficulties with producer Morris Levy and the label’s insistence on trying to make more singles so quickly, Alive ‘N Kickin’ broke up in the fall of 1971.

In 1976, the majority of the band reunited. This version of the band played throughout the tri-state area from the mid 1970s until the late 1980s as one of the premier dance, party, and show bands. The band has continued with different lineups, but Cardona and Parisio have remained a constant presence within the band.
