Blues Image

Blues ImageFrom: Tampa Bay, Florida

This one-hit wonder band made Latin-tinged pop/rock with just enough psychedelic tones to it. The band started in 1966 with Michael Pinera (guitar, vocals), Manuel Bertematti (percussion), and Joe Lala (drums). Also in 1966, Malcom Jones (bass) joined the band. Completing the lineup in 1968, the band added Frank “Skip” Konte (keyboards).

Later in 1968, they moved to New York City and managed a club called the Image. They would then move to Los Angeles and sign with Atlantic Records’ Atco division in February 1969. The debut, self-titled album was released in 1969, followed by the 1970 album, Open. The album featured the hit “Ride Captain Ride”, a pop rock staple that features some great vocal collaborations. The Blues Image could never follow the hit. Pinera left and was replaced by Kent Henry (guitar) and Dennis Correll (vocals). They broke up almost right after. A third album of outtakes was released, but the Blues Image were no longer. Konte went on to join Three Dog Night, and Pinera would go on to join Iron Butterfly.
