The Box Tops

Box Tops, TheFrom: Memphis, Tennessee, USA

Originally known as the Devilles, the Box Tops consisted of Alex Chilton (vocals), Gary Talley (guitar), John Evens (guitar, keyboards), Bill Cunningham (keyboards, bass), and Tom Boggs (drums).

The Box Tops are best known for their 1967 smash hit, “The Letter”. The song was written by Wayne Carson Thompson and produced by famous songwriter Dan Penn. Chilton was only sixteen years old when “The Letter” was recorded. The band was very unstable, and the lineup was changing all the time. Chilton was the only continuous member of the Box Tops, and when they broke up, he went on to form Big Star before moving to a solo career.
