Crowd + 1

BloodrockFrom: Fort Worth, TX, USA

This band formed in 1963 under the name The Naturals. The initial lineup featured Jim Rutledge (drums, vocals), Nick Taylor (guitar, vocals), Ed Grundy (bass, vocals), and Dean Parks (guitar). They released their debut single, “Hey Girl” / “I Want You,” in 1965 on the Rebel label. The band soon changed their name to Crowd + 1 and released three more singles. In 1967, Parks left Crowd + 1 to become the musical director for the Sonny & Cher Show, beginning a long career as a session musician. Lee Pickens was brought in as a replacement. Stevie Hill (keyboards, vocals) was also added to the band at this time.

The band continued under the moniker Crowd + 1 until 1969 when they changed their name to Bloodrock. The name Bloodrock was conceived by Grand Funk Railroad manager/producer Terry Knight. Bloodrock’s debut album was produced by Knight, and was released in March 1970, and peaked at #160 on the Billboard 200 chart. In 1970, Rutledge took over as exclusive lead vocalist, and Rick Cobb was brought in as the new percussionist and backup singer. This lineup went onto record four more albums.
