Focal Point

From: Liverpool, England

Forming in 1967, Focal Point were the first band to sign to The Beatles’ Apple Records. The ensemble only ever issued one single, 1968’s “Love You Forever”/”Sycamore Sid.” Paul McCartney endorsed and assisted with the single. Members included Paul Tennant (guitar, vocals), Dave Rhodes (lead guitar), Dave Slater (bass), Ted Hesketh (drums) and Tim Wells (keyboards). Their name was chosen by Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein and it was John Lennon’s love for their work that landed them a deal with Apple Publishing.

Rumour had it that the song “Sycamore Sid” was written as an homage to Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. However, this was later proven incorrect; Paul Tennant later disclosed that the song was in fact written about John Mayall who reportedly had a tree house.
