Hub Kapp & The Wheels [New Zealand]

Hub Kapp & The WheelsFrom: Toowoomba, Queensland, New Zealand

Not to be confused with the band of the same name out of Phoenix, Arizona, Hub Kapp & The Wheels were actually known as the Defenders. This R&B outfit relocated to Auckland in 1965 and attracted attention from A&R man Ron Dalton. Dalton asked the band to record two demo songs at Viking Records Studios. The band recorded their own song “I’m Happy Too” for the A-side, while the B-side is a cover of Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs’ “Stay.” Instead of releasing the single under the Defenders, Dalton renamed the band Hub Kapp & The Wheels. When performing live, they remained the Defenders, later changing their name to Chapter III in mid-1966. Band members included Ray Moore (bass, vocals), Rick Phillips (drums), Ron Smith (guitar, vocals) and Kerry Wright (guitar, vocals).
