Neo Maya

Neo MayaSUPER RARE original 1967 single by the Neo Maya – who were really British psych heads and pre-Deep Purple band Episode Six under a pseudonym – an absolutely amazing little freakout that appeared on the We Can Fly compilation. The A-side’s a cool cover of the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band song, heartbeat rhythm and breathy vocals intact. However, Neo Maya add in an unexpected big orchestral break and some jazzy upright bass. And, even more bizarrely, it’s got an “arranged and conducted by Ray Davies” credit! The flip’s even stranger, basically a drum solo with some freakish interstellar transmissions and monk chants in the background. Kinda sounds like Jimi Hendrix’s “Third Stone From the Sun” if Jimi were a drummer and a Trappist monk. Hideously rare record – I wish it were in better shape but it’s really the only copy I’ve ever seen. ~ http://www.popsike.com/
