The Nova Local

Nova Local, TheFrom: Chapel Hill, NC, USA

The Nova Local formed in 1964 and played psychedelic pop. Initially known as the Shadows, the Nova Local included Randy Winburn (vocals), Joe Mendyk (guitar), Phil Lambeth (guitar), Cam Schinhan (keyboards), Jim Opton (bass), and Bill Levasseur (drums). Chad & Jeremy played at Opton’s Phi Mu Alpha House for its annual charity concert, and the Nova Local opened the show. Rob Heller of the William Morris Agency accompanied Chad & Jeremy to the show, and was so impressed by the Nova Local that he offered them a contract that night. The band released the single “If You Only Had The Time” in 1967, and it became a minor hit in their home-state of North Carolina. The Nova Local released one album, Nova 1, on Decca Records in 1968. Shortly after the album’s release, the band called it quits. According to Opton, the album is the first time music was ever recorded using the Dolby NR system.
