Family Dog

Chet Helms

Chet Helms circa 1968 at the Avalon Ballroom. Chet would form Family Dog Productions in 1966

Family Dog was a commune of hippies who threw open dances and events. In 1966, the group connected with Chet Helms, a famous concert promoter responsible for bringing Janis Joplin to Big Brother & The Holding Company. Helms helped Family Dog establish themselves, assisting in the organization of their promotions and presentations. Helms would move in with the Family Dog. The first formal production was a concert located at Longhoremen’s Hall.

Later that year, Helms officially founded Family Dog Productions to being promoting concerts for the Fillmore Auditorium. The concerts became increasingly popular, and as a result, conflicts began to arise between Family Dog Productions and the Fillmore’s other promoter Bill Graham. Eventually Helms got the ability to host events at the Avalon Ballroom, expanding Family Dog Productions even further. This would become the bands main venue. Family Dog would host some of the more legendary concerts of the time at the Avalon between April 1966 and November 1968. ~ Wikipedia
