Sam Gopal

Sam GopalFrom: London, England

Sam Gopal, also known as Sam Gopal’s Dream, is an underground psych band out of England. The band is named after founder Sam Gopal. Gopal was born in Malaysia, and from the age of seven, he showed a real interest in music, playing tabla, an Indian percussion instrument. In April 1967, the band performed at the 14 Hour Technicolor Dream, an underground event organised by the International Times at Alexandra Palace. The band featured Gopal (tabla), Mick Hutchinson (guitar), and Pete Sears (bass, organ). Other acts included Pink Floyd, the Pretty Things, Savoy Brown, the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Soft Machine, and the Move. Sam Gopal’s Dream would also play at the UFO Club, the Electric Garden in Covent Garden, the Roadhouse, and Happening 44. The band then played the Christmas on Earth Show at Olympia with Traffic, Jimi Hendrix, and Pink Floyd. The band broke up in 1968, so Sam formed a new line-up that included singer Lemmy. Lemmy was a singer-guitarist for Gopal before becoming the bassist of Hawkwind. In 1975, Lemmy went onto form Motorhead. Gopal recorded the album Escalator in 1968 and released it in 1969. ~ Wikipedia
