Black Swan

From: San Francisco, CA, USA

Black Swan was a band that consisted of Tom Bright (drums), Saul Chait (bass), Jeff Cohen (guitar, keyboards), Mark Hanesworth (guitar), Bruce Good (lead guitar). They got their name from a Tyrone Power movie. Bright was from Austin, Texas, and he was heading to San Francisco because he was fed up with red-neck aggression. He dropped out of school, and answered and ad made by Good and Cohen wanting to form a band. Chait was then added, and they moved west.

Matthew Katz hooked up with the band and they recorded the songs “Lady Blonde” and “She Encircles Me” which would be included on the compilation Fifth Pipe Dream. The songs were very different than what the other bands of the area were making at the time, more jam-oriented music opposed to pop commercial tunes. Katz went on to move the band to Seattle. After a little more than a month of playing small crowds and making little money, Bright left the band.
