The Barbarians

The BarbariansFrom: Cape Code, MA, USA

The Barbarians formed in 1964 in Cape Code, Massachusetts. Active from 1964-1967, The Barbarians consisted of Victor “Moulty” Moulton (drums, vocals), Bruce Benson (guitar), Ronnie Enos (guitar), and Jerry Causi (bass). In 1965, Ronnie Enos was replaced by Geoffrey Morris (vocals, guitar).

Their debut single “Hey Little Bird” did terrible on the charts, which is unfortunate, because it is a great example of some early garage rock. Two of the band’s next three singles would chart, however, the best of which was “Are You A Boy or Are You A Girl?” The song reached number 55 on the Billboard charts. Their biggest break came when they were featured on The T.A.M.I. Show alongside the likes of The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, James Brown, and several other big-time names.

The band’s look was distinctive, dressing much like a pirate, with leather sandals, bloused-sleeve, open neck shirts, and hair that was longer than usual. They also had a band member with a hook instead of a hand. Moulton’s left hand was missing, so he had a hook-shaped prosthesis. Moulton lost his hand at age fourteen as the result of an explosion. He modified his prosthetic so he would still be able to hold a drumstick. The minor hit “Moulty” is somewhat of a humorous autobiographical song about his life and the loss of his hand. Moulton sang lead on this song, and was backed by New York session musicians, opposed to the regular band members. “Moulty” just barely made the charts, but it gained a cult following when included on the Nuggets compilation released in 1972. In 1967, Benson, Morris, and Causi all left to form Black Pearl. The Barbarians officially disbanded in 1968.
